Maker Faire Recap

PopUp Play had the opportunity to join dozens of other makers this weekend at Maker Faire Austin! We loved chatting with all the people who stopped in at our booth to see the new space ship. There we so many things to see and do, we’d be here forever if we told you about all of them. But here are a few of our favorites:

Arc Attack’s Unique and Spectacular Shows

Perhaps one of the most noticeable acts of the weekend was Arc Attack’s tesla coil musical act, complete with a robot on percussion. The show occurred multiple times over the weekend, and attracted quite a few audience members each time. They invited audience members to come on stage and dance in a cage, but we didn’t have the guts to volunteer (even though we know the science behind the display is perfectly safe)!

The brother duo behind Arc Attack created two tesla coils that produced the melody of the song and emitted electricity akin to lightning strikes between the two of them. One of the brothers even played guitar between the two coils—far braver than us!

Robots Galore!

As expected, Maker Faire had a plethora of robots, from multi-functional ones built by young makers to life-sized planes created by The Robot Group. For everything from homemade droids to mega-big, walking tin spiders, Maker Faire had us covered.

Robots Weren’t All Maker Fair Had To Offer, Though

Maker Faire does more than showcase makers’ talent. It’s also a great way for attendees to learn through interactive exhibits. Art In A Nutshell offered creative coloring for attendees to create their own masterpiece from what appeared to be a mess of scribbles. Meanwhile, in the Dark Room, Argo Design offered painting by light via their iconic RGB Wall.

The fair showcased a variety of makers in different fields, including The Burlap Bag, the quirky soy candle company known for its creative candle names, such as “Unicorn Puke” and “Crazy Cat Lady” and local bakeshop Bake Austin, which gave away a lego-themed and R2-D2 cake to two lucky winners over the weekend.

And Much, Much More…

Of course, we can’t cover all the awesome stuff that went down this weekend in one quick blog post. PopUp Play had a blast hanging out with fellow makers and attendees, though!

Thanks to Maker Faire Austin for making all this happen!
